2 Aircraft Rental Insurance

admin to Safety

I've talked about aviation rental insurance before, but my recent "brush with death" made me even more aware of the need to purchase it. The fact is, if you have an accident in a rental aircraft you could be liable for the damages. I don't know about you, but I don't have several thousand dollars lying around to cover such costs.

I recently heard of one pilot who got checked out in a rented Piper Arrow, then flew at night (even though he was a VFR pilot) and forgot to lower his gear at landing. Needless to say, there was extensive damage to the undercarriage among other things. I don't know but what he's having to belly up to cover the damages.

I suspect there are many companies that offer rental insurance, but I recommend AOPA's.

At any rate, check with you FBO to find out if their insurance covers the planes or if you're liable. Better safe than sorry.

I don’t know how is it in other countries. In Germany is it permitted to fly VFR-Night.
