Flight Training
by on March 27, 2005

One of the hardest aspects of learning to fly was handling the radio in the various and diverse settings in which I found myself. The airport I flew out of was Class D, so I got some experience there. But, I also had to learn to talk to the FSS, get flight following, and negotiate Class C and even B airspace.
Most of the time controllers were patient and helpful. I can't complain about how I was treated.
Nevertheless, one of the most helpful training tools in learning to sound like I knew what I was talking about on the radio was the Comm 1 Radio Simulator software.
I used to practice with the software everynight on my home computer. Using a headset you could actually interact with the software and it would correct you should you reply with an incorrect response. (Something I often did early on.)
I was amazed at how "professional" I sounded when I did actually interact with controllers in flight. I even use it now to brush up. I highly recommend Comm 1 as a resource you ought to invest in, and they didn't pay me for the privilege of saying so!
You can find copies on eBay for a song.
