Lessons Learned from September 11th

I lived in New York during September 11th, so you can understand why that day is hard for me. I personally witnessed my favorite, vibrant city reduced to depressing and quiet one. Like so many others, I wondered about loves ones when the planes struck the towers. I began to panic when I couldn't contact anyone because the phone lines were jammed. I remember watching the new coverage and wondering if we were ever going recover from this.
A fast forward six years and while the pain will never go away, I'm glad to know we have learned from September 11th. I'm not naive to think we won't be attacked again, but at least I know we can take away lessons from that tragic day.
I found a great article on MSNBC, about eleven lessons learned from September 11th. This piece hit home for me. One of the ways I've been able to put that day behind me is by knowing we have learned something.
1. Heroes are everywhere. The many brave and selfless acts of firefighters, flight attendants, co-workers, passers-by and volunteers proved that Americans are generous with their courage and that heroes are all around us.
2. Protect the cockpit. Complacency in the cabin during a terrorist attempt is no longer an option. The airlines have reinforced the cockpit doors and implemented safety procedures, but in the end, if terrorists attempt to force their way into the cockpit, ordinary citizens must try to stop them at all costs.
3. Air travel is integral to our way of life. Air travel completely ceased the week after 9/11. From mail and cargo transport to business and leisure travel - the entire country was at a standstill. We now realize how crucially important air travel is to our everyday life as a nation.
4. Terrorism has many faces. Whether it is osama bin laden
, Timothy McVeigh, or a female suicide bomber, terrorism has many faces, and we must never judge a book by its cover.5. We must support the men and women of our military. We may not agree with the decisions of the leaders in our government and armed forces, but service members and their families are risking their lives for our country. We owe it to them to support their sacrifice unconditionally.
