China launched a new satellite on Wednesday as a part of Beidou, to reduce the dependence of the U.S GPS. Beidou, which is China's indigenous satellite navigation and positioning network, had been started in 2000, to curb the Chinese dependence on GPS. This system will provide SMS and time services and also satellite navigation in the Asia-Pacific region by 2012 and world wide services will be launched by the year 2020, as a Chinese answer to GPS. The Beidou-1 system which was launched with the primary aim of cutting down dependence on GPS, did not fulfil that particular purpose but proved to be very useful for communication during the earthquake in May 2008. The Beidou-2 system, which will consist of a total of 35 satellites, was developed to set up a better regional and global navigation system, which will eventually lessen the dependence on GPS.

The Federation Aviation Administration (FAA), suspended major projects, throughout the nation, as legislation was not passed by the Congress, giving them the necessary orders to continue work.
The FAA stopped work, for the second day on aviation projects, relating to runway safety, air traffic control, R&D, up gradation etc.
Secretary, US Transportation, Ray LaHood, appealed to Congress, to pass the bill to enable thousands of aviation workers of FAA, to start work on the stalled projects. He said considering the state of the US economy, layoffs would be hard on the American families, whose livelihood depended on these aviation projects.
The stop work has resulted in stalling of aviation projects worth over $5 million, across the country.
FAA, however has stated, that the suspension of the projects would, in no way compromise with public safety.

These GPS chips system is also expected to stem corruption involved in clearing files. The GPS enabled chips or Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) will be fixed with almost 5,000 files at a cost of Rs 50. The files fitted with the GPS chips can be tracked with the help of a reader upto 5 m. The technology has been used in Rajasthan for tracking tigers and buses.
