General aviation has never been safer, and accident statistics for 2004 prove it, according to preliminary data from the National Transportation Safety Board. Pilot Hans Georg Schmid, a former Swissair pilot, was killed on Monday when the small "experimental" plane he was flying crashed into an apartment building in Basel, Switerland.
