Teen Takes Flight
Last month, 14-year-old Michael Hull completed his first solo flight in a Blanik L-13 two-seater glider.

Michael began gliding lessons in August with instructor Jack Sayger. To prepare for the flight, Michael had to make 21 flights with Sayger. His ground-based training included learning the basics of flying the aircraft, knowing the function of each of the glider's parts, learning pilot hand signals, and flight maneuvers. Michael qualified for soloing in the minimum amount of time allowed.

"It was scary and pretty nerve-racking," said Robert, Michael's father. Michaels' mother wasn't told about the flight until the boy landed safely.

"When he's coming back down is when you start to worry about it, but he did great. ... They are saying he is doing so well, because he doesn't know how to drive. He doesn't have any bad habits yet. The only thing he knows how to do is fly an airplane," Robert said.

Michael is one of the youngest members of the Low Country Soaring Association - a group that includes former fighter pilots.
