In remote places like California's Death Valley, total dependence on GPS navigation systems can be a matter of life and death.
Every summer in Death Valley, around 250 thousand vacationists venture out into 120-degree heat to click photographs of gleaming salt flats, leaving behind their air conditioned cars They pour over from all over the world, but many are equipped with a traveling companion GPS attached to the dashboard of their cars.
But when plenty of deserted dirt roads lie between you and your destination, things can get askew even with a GPS.
A couple of years ago a mother and son on a camping trip had GPS in their car and got stuck on an abandoned mining road for five days. as a result of which the son died and mother barely survived. . Relying blindly on the GPS proved to be a fatal error for them.
Partially, the problem is that GPS companies might be relying on old maps with roads that have long been closed. So updating the maps is very important..
